How should LMX4 be administered?
The techniques used include Venipuncture or Venous Cannulation
Can be use by adults, including elderly, and children over one month of age.
Apply 1g to 2.5g of cream onto the skin to cover a 2.5cm x 2.5cm (6.25cm2) area where venous cannulation or venipuncture will occur. Apply only 1g of cream or less to infants below the age of 1 year.
1g of cream is the same as 5cm of cream squeezed from the 5g tube or 3.5cm from the 30g tube. LMX4 Topical Anaesthetic Cream
Cover the cream with a dressing to prevent any disturbance with any external factors. Desired effects or numbness should appear after 30 minutes.
Are Precautions with LMX 4 Cream?
Always read the label to see the full list of precautions to be taken with this cream.
LMX 4 Cream is for external use only and avoid all contacts with eyes, as it can cause severe eye irritation. Wash eyes straight away and always wash hands after application to skin.
Propylene glycol can cause skin irritation. Discontinue using if symptoms persist.
Avoid using in large quantities over raw or blistered areas and do not apply on irritated skin.
Increased application of LMX4 can increase blood levels of Lidocaine. Overdose is unlikely however any signs of toxicity can include blurred vision, dizziness or drowsiness, difficulty breathing, trembling, chest pain, or irregular heartbeat. Hieghtens chances of toxicity when using LMX4 alongside other anaethetics.
Should give a maximum of 2 dosage every 24 hours.
Use LMX4 Topical Anaesthetic Cream alongside other medicines?
Lidocaine should be used with caution in patients receiving Class I anti- arrhythmic drugs (such as tocainide and mexiletine) since the toxic effects are additive and generally synergistic.
Drugs that reduce the clearance of lidocaine (eg cimetidine or betablockers such as propranolol) may cause potentially toxic plasma concentrations when lidocaine is given in repeated high doses over a long period of time.
Give Lidocaine to pregnant or lactating women?
Lidocaine can cross the placental barrier and has use during pregnancy if absolutely required. It is also secreted during breastfeeding and should be given with precaution to breastfeeding mothers.
